“Professor John”

Many people may not know that John Stedman, who died unexpectedly in June, team-taught a UW-Eau Claire Honors Class with Dr. Ruth Cronje. John enjoyed this endeavor and loved working with the students as they collected data for a social justice research project. Here are excerpts from the tributes students sent upon hearing of John’s passing.

“The most amazing thing about John was that even though he had his struggles, he overcame them, and then spent his life serving others to help them overcome their personal struggles and win equality. Thank you John for your support and enthusiasm you showed my honors class everyday.”

“John was a wonderful man whose life goal was to make sure everybody else knew just how great they were. Our class was no exception; he made us feel like we were making a difference in our community and that feeling has stuck with me since my class with him last Fall. I’ll never forget him or how he changed my entire perspective on life.”

“John was an incredible man, and will be greatly missed by many, especially by myself and his other students from the Health, Science, and Power course he co-taught with Dr. Ruth Cronje. I admired John most for his honesty and his dedication to the alternative courts systems and making upstream changes. . . . John showed me that even as a college student, I have the power to make a true difference in the community and move the dial. . . John’s work will continue to live on in all those he inspired.”

To assure that John’s work will continue, contributions to the John Stedman Step-Up Scholarship Fund are still being sought. The money will be used to provide a scholarship to Gamaliel Weeklong Leadership Training each year. Preference will be given to people in recovery from addictions.  To donate to the Stedman Fund, you can mail contributions to:
